How to Choose Between Urban & Suburban Living

housing market
You know all about Real Estate 101, and you’re excited to get into the housing market yourself. But do you think you’d be happier looking within an urban area or a suburban one? The housing market within Victoria differs greatly in both areas, and it’s a personal decision as to which would suit you better. Luckily, I can offer some important things to think about, so you know where to start looking.

Where Do You Work and Play?

Commuting on a daily basis isn’t all that fun – so if you work downtown, it may be worth considering living in or near downtown to save yourself some extra time. If you’re lucky enough to carpool, have access to great transit, or work from home most days, this may not factor into your decision.

Another thing to think about when deciding where to look is what activities you do on a regular basis. Do you play basketball on a court at your local playground twice a week? Maybe you love your local gym and don’t want to leave it. Perhaps all your friends live in a particular area of town. It may be more optimal to look at these neighbourhoods first when you’re in the market to buy.

Schools and Other Amenities

If you have children, have you thought about wanting to keep them in the same school they are already going to? Are you also considering which school you want them to go to in the future? Suburban areas are more common for families for a reason. There are a few exceptions, but generally, there are a lot more parks in suburban areas for families to enjoy, as well as a larger variety of family-friendly restaurants and community centres.

On the other hand, urban areas often come with a variety of other cultural activities, arts and entertainment, such as theatre and museums. This may be more important to you or even to your entire family.

How Much Noise Do You Want to Hear?

When you live downtown, or in a densely populated urban area you are bound to hear some extra noise. People walking home late at night, traffic, and music from surrounding restaurants and bars are very common noises when living in an urban area.

Chances are, if you want to live in the city, you’ll be buying a condo or townhouse. Living in the suburbs, however, means you’ll be looking at houses. So, size is a huge factor – and you will get more bang for your buck in a suburban housing market.

How Much Room Do You Need?

Chances are, if you want to live in the city, you’ll be buying a condo or townhome. Living in the suburbs, however, means you’ll be looking at houses. So, size is important. If you need the space, you’ll get more bang for your buck in a suburban housing market.

Be realistic about how much space your family needs. If you need three bedrooms, a large kitchen, or a yard, things get tricky, not to mention more expensive, if you’re looking in the city. If you’re on your own, a new couple, or spend minimal time at home, then a condo should suit you just fine.
